I got a 96 2500 ext cab long bed inherited with a blown engine. I will be stabbing a junkyard motor in it, and obviously plan on swapping any gasket I can since it's out. additionally the water pump and MAYBE starter, along with tuneup. is there anything I'm missing that should probably be replaced now instead later?

I did an LS swap in my 67 suburban and I did all the gaskets I could reach but didn't really touch any sensors and had good luck. not sure what's prone to fail on these obs trucks though. any tips is greatly appreciated!

I'll be looking into the junkyard engines today or tomorrow so I'm not sure on the miles yet. tbh I'd be lucky to find something around the 150k range. the truck i have is right at 199k

Make sure you get some kind of warranty.

Back in the old days it was easy to hook up a fuel line to the fuel pump, hook up an oil pressure gauge, stand a radiator out in front of it,bolt on a starter, hook a hot wire to the dist. and fire it up and run it for 20min or so before you poked it in under the hood. Not so easy these days with all the electronic gadgets.

ya i hear ya, im calling around now and not too many around here i guess. getting quoted 1k so far with unknown miles, ridiculous lol. my LS 5.3 WITH 4l60 was cheaper than that. i found a few cheaper and havent heard back from either yet.

do you guys think oil pump, timing chain and cover should be on the list? im trying to keep this budget friendly but at some point i have to stop this shopping cart lol

Oil pump is not a bad idea and maybe pull the front main cap and #1 and #2 rod caps and inspect the bearings and crank. Timing chains on these motors are pretty hardy. With the pan off you can rock the crank back and forth and look up in there and see how much slack is in the chain. Replace the timing cover and rear main seal while you're at it.

With brass!
Many were brass to start with from GM.

I cannot think of a single Vortec engine I have owned that did not come with brass plugs from the factory including the 1996 305 block I had. The copper in the brass will turn kind of a greenish color with the slight surface oxidation.

Goes to show I've been out of the car biz for awhile. I think the last engine swap I did was in an '86 1/2 ton Chevy back in 2000. I R&Red the engine in my ElCamino about 4yrs ago but that don't count.
