I wonder why it isn’t recommended? With the heat and mountain grades I have to pull its a must. But I’m certainly open if there is a better way
mountain conditions definiterly call for more cooling. you make way less power and you move less air, so mods for power make heat but you cant get that heat through the radiator easily.

It's not "my" reasoning. It comes directly from Hayden.
www.haydenauto.com/en/technicians-resources/faq-fan-clutches

The fan clutch has to match the fan blade. A typical automotive fan doesn't have enough blade pitch (doesn't move enough air) to cause the fan clutch to disengage properly.

So of course the HD or SD clutches move more air--they never disengage when used with typical fans.

Find out what fan clutch is recommended on the vehicle that used your fan blade. Use that fan clutch, or one like it.
they just happen to make the hubs/bolt spacing the same as the regular models, whcih is prob how the confusion started

After reading the article Hayden wrote I can see them attempting to help in the fuel economy side. That being said if I have to by more gas I’d rather do that then replace a big block. I realize my situation is a bit extreme compared to other places in the country. But I needed to take these steps to keep the temps in check.

Now I'm wondering what the blade pitch is for the Dorman 621111 that I ordered yesterday. My existing fan clutch is the original, afik, but is functioning normally according to my preferred shop. I have a GM Genuine Heavy Duty fan clutch in reserve.

I use the Hayden severe duty clutch with my factory plastic fan. It engages quickly, and disengages fine. I highly recommend it. You will notice a difference in MPGs though, and it’s loud…but again, it will disengage perfectly fine.

it’s good enough to keep everything cool on a summer day at the beach. I think beach driving is one of the most stressful climates for a cooling system.

Both of mine work very well. Both clutches engage and disengage perfectly fine. I think you will be happy with it on your next trip. Because of your previous experience towing I recommend you install a severe duty clutch with it.
