a bad coil will take out an ICM. i replace them in pairs and have done so the last decade. i also replace the coil when putting in a new/rebuilt distributor. played musical coils/ICMs/distributors on a buddies squarebody dump truck a few years back with 2 Accell brand amazon distributors. i finally said enough and put it my big cap gm performance HEI, and has had zero issues since.

Now that's interesting. How does one put a big cap HEI on these trucks?

There's "big cap" HEIs with a 4-pin module that are not computer controlled. Installing one means screwing the computer control of the fuel as well as computer control of the ignition.

Later "big cap" units had a 7-pin module that a computer can interface with. But I don't understand why there'd be any advantage to using the big-cap computer-controlled unit.

Either way, it's not going to solve my problem. I'm 2 steps from grabbing an OEM distributor from the yard and seeing if that makes ANY difference. It's just absolutely ridiculous, having to gamble on 35+ year old electronics to get a truck on the road.
