So does it have two wires from the battery to the starter then? If you don't hook them both up make real sure the top post one doesn't ground out on anything.
Side post cables are bad about corroding inside the insulation. You should probably replace both positives an the negative with new. Then you could get rid of the top post cable all together....
New ends won't help if the cable is bad but good luck.
You should get a side post accessory cable bolt then put a ring terminal on that second cable that goes over to the fuse panel. That way the cable to the starter has a better connection to the battery. That's how I did mine when it was giving me trouble starting an it has worked great.
