The outer black fabric on the hood insulator, anyone ever replace just that? It seems to be exactly like the material on the bottom of beds or sofas. The somewhat translucent type you can almost see through. That fabric is called Chambric, I think. Question is-is that the correct fabric, if not, does anyone know what it’s called? Is it flame retardant?
A GM replacement is $180.00, but the $350.00 shipping confirms they really don’t want to sell them. I know LMC has them and they are cheaper, but laminating a layer of fabric seems a better solution.

What about those other sound deadening materials that also heat resistant. Frogskin? Or something I see adds for that material in the street trucks magazines.

I saw stuff like that, but kinda hoping to just use my original insulator, it’s still in mostly great shape, just a few areas where the outer fabric is damaged. I’m not sure that stuff would stick to insulation and conform to “topography”.

The fabric in this picture doesn’t look correct, although that’s supposedly the part.

After doing some research, I ordered this material. The original material just peels right off. I’ll use 3M Adhesive Spray to apply to formed fiberglass hood insulator panel.

Fusible Black INTERFACING/Interlining -Non Woven - Light Weight 60" Wide- 3 Yards

If it’s not suitable, I’ll return it.

3M, even the high strength 90 doesn't fare too well even for headliners because of the heat...
The Weldwood Landau is the defacto for that but I couldn't speak to engine bay heat... Would imagine it would be miles better whatever that means....

interesting. Never heard of the 20... or paid attention to the actual heat ratings.

From personal experience the other 3M (77/90) fail prematurely in headliner applications. Adhering to garage door panels as well....
Weldwood Landau has proven so far to be in a different league..

I still have time to research this more, I’m not convinced that’s the one yet. One thing that helps is there’s 20 plastic retainers +2 metal clips that would at least “assist” holding fabric.

I bought mine from lmc as apparently, at some point, 150lbs of grease and dynamite exploded in my engine compartment. Po apparently could not be bothered to clean it off until it became one with the underside of my hood. Bought it, covered it, moved on.
