on the LS engines that have a slight lifter tick, i drain the oil and put 4 quarts of cheap Dex III ATF in and let it idle for a couple hours.
Drain and fill with whatever oil is on sale and drive it. Most of the times it will cure the lifter tick for a few months.
Yup, old 92 jeep used in the high country of Colorado for years, extreme offroading, as soon as tick showed up on front of the 4.0 i ran 1 quart of tranny fluid with 3 qts of oil for about 1 month and then changed the oil, goog for another year or two as it would clean out the gunk on push rods and lifters built up from low oil flow, high temp offroading....

I run a full synthetic 10w40 motorcycle oil. It is rated for high temperature . I use it because my Tahoe will sit in the summer heat running for hours. It is an amazing oil. Holds 40psi at hot idle.

After a fast idle or driving down the road, the oil cooler sheds enough heat to raise it to 45-48 psi at idle.

10w40 synthetic is still great in the winter. No ticking, instant oil pressure, etc. I’ll always run it.

I run 15w40 diesel oil in my Jeep 4.0. It’s thick and has a tick when cold until it starts flowing well. It’s cheap though, I don’t mind it. It doesn’t break down easily.

Lake Speed Jr. did a video on this, but I don't recall the outcome. The findings were quite nuanced.

I've watched a lot of his content, that episode included. What I took away from it was this:

Lower wear != Lower friction

Lower friction != Lower wear

ZDDP is not a "more is always better" additive; too much is harmful

Tribology is FAR more complex than some seem to believe
