My front brake shields are shot. Does anybody have a line on these? All the after-market/Dorman shields I've seen are different. This is a 2 bolt shield and it serves as a cover for the wheel speed sensors (which I have to replace.

Well looks like I'll have to fabricate them.

Also, things aren't going well wiith my intended speed sensor install -- the hub bolts which secure the dust shield, which covers the sensors, have no corners left -- rusted bad -- so removing those bolts is becoming a nightmare. I've tried welding another bolt to the bolt head, had to re-do that several times. and have managed to get one out after hours of work. There is just little to grip onto and no room where the bolt heads are. I can see why the design has been changed to bolt from behind. I bet I could cut the bolts off, and then try to remove the hubs, leaving a length of bolt exposed. That would be much easier to grip with vicegrips or pipe wrench, BUT, will the hubs themselves be stuck on the steering knuckle? Will I make myself even a worse situation by cutting them off?

If I knew the hubs would come off fairly easily, I'd cut those bolt heads off (I did order proper replacements already). But I just do wonder about how hard it will be to get the hubs off.

Brake shields:

I bought a USED pair in fine condition on eBay from some seller there. He has them listed on occasion.

I'll take a look and post a link if I can find it.

(edit) I can't find them listed on eBay at this time, but from what I remember the listing comes and goes.

Post a search on eBay for that the number(s) given below and have eBay send you an email whenever there's an auction containing that number.

Or contact the eBay seller somehow, and ask him about them.

The OEM p/n is 15998039 “SHIELD. Brake Flange Plate” supposedly supersedes 15959655 (“Shield, Front Brake”);

Here's a picture from my eBay purchasing history, showing the seller info (click on picture to enlarge):

removing those bolts is becoming a nightmare.

Yup... in my case, on the driver's side, which gets more salt (even though my Suburban was RARELY driven in the salt). The passenger's side was easier.

I got the torch out and heated the one, stubborn and rusted bolt (and knuckle and hub, by proximity) to get it loose. Pounded an undersized socket (9/16" maybe, hex head deep well impact socket) onto what remained of the bolt head. It worked, but it wasn't pretty.

On the K1500s those three bolts are torqued to 100lbft, so they're reasonably tight already, never mind the rust.

will the hubs themselves be stuck on the steering knuckle? Will I make myself even a worse situation by cutting them off?

I don't remember having trouble removing the hubs. Of course, the driver's side knuckle had received heat when removing the bolt, so maybe that helped.

If I knew the hubs would come off fairly easily, I'd cut those bolt heads off (I did order proper replacements already). But I just do wonder about how hard it will be to get the hubs off.

YMMV.

It looks like he's sold some of the brake shields in the past year.

Let me know if you find a source for new hub bolts. I just replaced a wheel sensor and had to remove one bolt and loosen another. I had to pound a socket on to them to get em out. I think next time I won't be so lucky.

Well, I've decided to replace the hubs as well. The allen head screws holding the wheel sensors in are toast. No way of getting those out. So I think it will just all be easier to cut the hub bolts heads off, remove the old hubs, pipe wrench out the remaining stud bits and then add new hubs back with new sensors already in them.

New hub bolts arrived today, and hubs are due tomorrow.

Funny how an little ABS light on the dash because of a bad sensor, has led me to replace calipers, disks, hubs, and hub bolts, as easier than trying to salvage what was there by replacing the sensor alone! Oh well, that's rust in a northern salt state. Good to know all that stuff will be new now, anyway. Inspection due the 16th hope everything is done by then......
