@OP don’t be cutting up your interior pieces! Those are not available new and can be hard to find used. Take your time and they will come out.
Yeah, it takes some patience. Those clips that hold the panels near the rear window suck...

OK, speakers are here!

I didn't realize I needed adapters, so while I wait for them to arrive, I've been trying to ascertain how the new speakers will fit.

The originals are surprisingly still in fair condition (the truck came with a dash cover, which may have helped preserve the OE speakers, assuming it's been there for most of the truck's existence), so I'll probably keep them for... something. (If I ever want or need to sell or otherwise get rid of the truck, or simply decide I want to use the new speakers elsewhere, it'll be good to keep the OE speakers, so I can just reinstall them if needed).

Meanwhile, the new speaker on the drivers side only seems to fit with the tweeter on the inside. My understanding is that installing the speakers "tweeters in" (pointing at each other) will result in a narrower sound stage), but I don't really mind, given that it would still be quite an improvement. I'm just not sure if there's a "right" way install the speakers wherein "tweeters in" is somehow bad.

Thoughts?

Run it, you won't notice any difference. That's just how it goes sometimes with oblong plate speakers in tight spaces.

I'm a little late to the show, but I figured I'd put my two cents in.

The $30 Pyle speakers you can find on Amazon are absolute garbage, but I threw a set in WCJr just to have some tunes while driving. A sub might help, but not enough that I'd be proud of the system.

On a budget, the $60 Infinity Reference speakers are probably your best deal. I have a set for Roscoe, but I haven't started putting the interior back together yet.

@Erik the Awful Hmm, OK.

I already got these Kappas (?) and yesterday, I almost passed out from the heat, but I got them in.

I haven't given them a good listen yet, but they sounded almost the same when I listened to the local all news AM for a few seconds.

OK, I listened to them some more, and they do sound quite a bit better.

They're still not super good at the bass (which, given their relatively small size and sub-optimal mounting positions, isn't too surprising), but the highs are clearer and the mids are less muddy and boxy.

When I switch between the new fronts and the stock rears, the difference is like night and day. Those old ones are so annoying and muddy sounding!

I'll now have to get another pair for the rear, maybe the ones that Erik the Awful recommended.

I preemptively got adapters for the rear speakers, so I should be all set once I've saved up a bit.

Glad you could hear the difference....you will be shocked when you add a little boom to your system.
And then it snowballs from there!!!
Ain't never enough bass!!! Lol
