Had a shop change the water pump,both hoses and the thermostat on my son's truck and now they are saying every time they put the radiator cap on with it running it kills the truck and it won't restart until you take the cap off again. I'm lost. Any ideas.

Huh? Is the coil grounded thru the cap? Even if the head gasket was completely blown out, causing it to push coolant thru the radiator, it wouldn't kill the engine. I'd find a new shop. But by the sounds of it you have a blown head gasket.

Sounds dumb but can you put a thermostat backwards in these trucks? Or could the water pump be going backwards somehow?

The coolant system and the combustion system are isolated from each other, so basically this isn't happening the way they think it's happening. The only point where these two systems get close to each other is head gaskets.

Ok. Thanks. Just really lost for an explanation. It ran to get into the shop so don't know why it doesn't run now.

Just to let you know I found out the problem and it had nothing to do with the radiator cap. They broke the vacuum line between the tbi and the pcv valve. For some reason they were throttling it up when they put the cap on causing it to die because of the vacuum leak. We tested the radiator with a combustion kit and everything checked out fine. Thanks for all the help.
