So, nice to meet everyone. I am Grendel, from Pirate and Irate 4x4, with a lot of builds under my belt. I have friends all over the US and most of them are jerks that constantly find me new things to get into, like this one.

My friend John Giffin recently moved to AZ, from our lovely state of NH and he now spends time hunting down rust free sheet metal, for his salt challenged friends. I swear, I didn't know I needed a 3rd tow rig project, but here we are.

He posted it up, for a reasonable price, hauled here.

It's a 1996, sans seats, some lights engine and trans. They were using it for parts to keep the other farm trucks going.

I happen to have built a 518CI forged, stroked and bored 8.1L and a ZF6, along with a later model Disk braked AAM 11.5 that bolts into this.

I also got some later model seats that are more comfortable and power. Will have our upholstery guy do the carpet and headliner and do all new OEM seat covers for them.

Should be a rocking tow rig. We're going to strip the interior out soon, I know I have to cut and weld the trans tunnel to fit the monster ZF6. The 8.1L bolts in.

My son plans to use it to haul a garage trailer for his dirt bike racing affliction and we both love this body style since the first truck he road in was my 1998 Burb 2500.

When I said rust free, I meant it. Most of the chassis has original paint on it.

We're going to clean up the body, repair the dings and cracks and do a decent paint job. He wants a cowl hood for it.

Interior will get the 2003 Seats, with new covers and a custom console to cover the trans tunnel changes.

Today, we did all new control arms, steering linkages and a steering box.

I am noodling on a Delphi 600 box, just need spacers off the frame.

I also have a 2013 cut away van chassis here that has different steering linkage, which is way beefier. I may be doing that with that Delphi 60o box from it.

So I have a 2013 C4500 cut van out back. Looking at the Delphi 600 steering box (much better than what we have) and the beefier steering linkages, may get to it. Would need some spacers, like I did for this box on my Dodge Ram 2500.

I'd also go with an all u-joint steering shaft.

How so? Googling tell me that several companies are building retrofits for 50's and early 60's Chevys that used an older system, and quick ratios, but I'm not seeing anything that's telling me they're better than what we have.

They're variable output = Tighter steering feel.

Also, a lot more support, easier to find these days.

Why do you think the OEM's moved to them, if not better?

How are they variable? Are they not gear driven?

I could see more OEM units being available in salvage yards. That would get people around the issue of cheap rebuilds that fail at install or shortly after.

Why do you think the OEM's moved to them, if not better?

Oh that's easy. Cost, and possibly lighter.... the same reasons why they do a lot of things. Newer doesn't necessarily mean better.

They have a variable servo.

Delphi steering boxes cost more, not less.
