I expect them all to be Chinesium, for years now. None of it will be the sources from decades ago. Absolutely buying "new" though, not rebuilt.

The Bosch SR8552N PMGR starter I bought for my Suburban is labeled as "Assembled in USA." Almost certainly from foreign parts, but hey, it's something. Still sitting in the box as my original decided to act right again for a while.

At more than 1.5x the price of the Remy, I don't appreciate Bosch telling me not to hit the starter with a hammer. If I'm gonna spend $165 on a starter, I'm gonna do what I damn well please with it..

And yeah, you can rest assured when it says "Assembled in USA" that none of it was made here. I wish our laws regarding country of origin had any teeth at all. I hate being lied to, especially by some stupid label on a box. At least they didn't tell you it was MADE here.

I had to laugh about that as well. Here's an unobstructed picture of the offending sticker.

:Nonono: No matter if Bosch, Delco, Remy or Zippo, any and all PMGR PG260 starters to fit GM V6-V8 should have same "No Strike" declaration ... FACT: its permanent magnets are rather brittle Ceramic castings that're tightly fitted against inside of starter case. Nothing like old 10MT field coils & pole shoes! If you do whack/strike case sharply, it'll very likely crack its magnets; destroying their mag fields and ruining that PMGR starter. T SHIRT ! Your money, your starter.

If the starter doesn't want its attitude adjusted, then it should do its damn job.

Gonna switch gears here and ask another question.....how are you guys shimming these PMGR starters? Using the 1/8" bit between the flywheel and the armature trick? Paperclip between the gear mesh? I'm having trouble getting mine to quiet down. I've tried all combinations of shim, and eventually added the "middle size" shim to the outer bolt only. I noticed when I had the starter on with no shims, there was a mile between the flywheel and armature shaft. Furthermore and finally, I'm not happy with the sloppy casting on the original new starter, so I got a 4.3 S-10 unit. Nice flat, machined finish. The GM bolts will be in today as well.

You're supposed to hammer on the solenoid and not the motor anyways.
When our '90 Burb needed starter work, we'd have to smack it (starter) with a hammer to get it to start when the engine was warm(short trips like getting gas, where you're trying to restart after only 10-15 minutes). It was only in these situations, truck was fine otherwise. Dad finally rebuilt the starter (regular GM larger starter, 10MT?). No more issues with starting, after the rebuild.

My experience might be in the minority but I have yet to need any shims on a PMGR in several different applications.

Have you got your replacement starter in yet, and it needs shimming, or is this the aftermarket one with the funky casting? (btw I think they all tend to look a bit rough)
