What I had read is that when Mercedes first switched to a water based paint it wasn't holding up very well. What you describe sounds like maybe a contamination issue in the paint shop.
Totaly-but apart from this particular place, they rusted everywhere else. E class of this peripd was the same-even S211 I had had rust issues.

Finally changed out the little shock absorber for the tensioner pulley. After I removed the original, and cleaned it, it didn't look bad. It still had plenty of pressure. The bushings only had slight play, but enough to make a racket when installed on the running engine. I also put a new Continental serpentine belt on. The old one was a US made NAPA, and looked to be in good shape, but I already had the UK made replacement, so I went ahead and changed it. The belt definitely wasn't as easy to change as the one on my 454. The belt has to go around the fan, and there isn't as much clearance to work.

The other thing I did, was to swap out the hood release handle inside the car. It's plastic, and the original looked fine, until I saw a crack where the barrel on the cable interfaces with the handle. It works well now. Fiddling around trying to grab the barrel and pull it by hand was annoying.

Tonight I got inspired to try to air up the spare tire. It was obviously flat for whatever reason.

It seemed to air up fine and I was still inspired, so I decided to clean it. It's on an alloy rim, which surprised me, and it was used enough to get quite dirty. I also kept looking for the dot code, because I wanted to know the date. I couldn't find it, until I realized the code was right there....only three digits! Yes, this is the original spare from 1996.

Very minor accomplishments today, but it feels good to get them taken care of.

First, I cleaned the floor of the trunk. I'm not sure it was needed, or the best thing to use, but I used a Zep pet pet stain cleaner. My thought was that it might do a better job of taking care of any mouse leavings. Really the area didn't look bad to begin with. I then put the spare tire back that I cleaned the other day.

Second, I got the stereo working. It actually took me awhile. I was confused because it had a security light blinking, but would not prompt me for the code. It turned out that I had a blown fuse. I didn't suspect a fuse because I figured with the light blinking it must be getting power. Once I got that replaced, I was prompted for the code, and everything worked, including the power antenna. I'm going to clean the antenna mast tomorrow. Preliminary plan is wiping it down with alcohol, and lubing it with a spray dry lube, or maybe wax.... reading up on it now.

I also tried doing a little cleaning on the interior with the pet stain remover, but I don't think it's great for general use. I'm going to pursue other options.

When I washed the carpet and seats in my 99 I used the Zep pet carpet shampoo. It seemed like it did the job. I do have a few stains but my stuff marinated in mouse leavings for 10 years. My way of doing it was probably more excessive then what you need to do. I put it in a weed sprayer topped off with water and soaked it and let it set. Did it a few times and then hit it with a pressure washer. I did have to do some spot cleaning but I just used a small carpet shampooer and that seemed to do the trick on getting most of the left over out. Might be worth a shot for you if you have a shampooer.

I tried pressure washing the carpet from my truck, and it ruined the look of it. Maybe because I didn't extract it? I didn't have that issue when I pressure washed carpeted Volvo floor mats, Though. I did just buy an extractor nozzle for my shop vac, but I don't know if I have the courage to try to do the whole carpet myself, Though. I've considered getting it done professionally.

The interior doesn't really look bad, but it does smell mousy. Well, I suppose if you look at it, it definitely needs to be vacuumed. Besides pieces of whatever, the backs of the floor mats are made of something that's black, disintegrates, and sticks to the carpet.

Tried charging the AC this morning. I found the low side port last night, finally. It's kinda buried. So I put the gauge on, and it was low. I then put a can of R134a on it, and the pressure started going up. The clutch did engage. I'd stop the charging every so often so the can could warm back up, and at some point the gauge needle dropped back down and wouldn't come back up. I fiddled with the connection and could hear a hiss, so I'm thinking the seal to the low side port isn't reliable. I have another hose, but there's no gauge on it. Not having AC is why I didn't drive the car to work all week.... it's been hot and humid.

I do think I'm getting a slight amount of cooling, but I also get a weird rattle out of the compressor. I hope its not disintegrating on the inside.

Changed the oil. I found I don't have the right cap style filter wrench, so I had to use my nylon strap wrench. It's a plastic housing/cap with a bare element filter under it, that should be torqued to spec. Right now, it's just "tight". I'll have to order the correct one, so I can torque it to 25NM.

Discovered that unfortunately, my AC compressor has what reminds me of Predator blood on the bottom of it, so I'm guessing that means it needs more than a recharge.

I'm hoping to get the gear oil changed in the differential tomorrow.

I finally vacuumed the car. I had ordered a new shop vac from Home Depot, that arrived Tuesday.

After watching a Youtube video, I also bought a muffler/defuser for the exhaust, which quiets it down a bit, and pool skimmer socks that keep the filter cleaner.

I think this is made by the same company that actually made the vacuum for HD.

I also bought a carpet extractor attachment, but I haven't tried it yet.... might be awhile before I get to that.

I was just scrolling through the MB equivalent RPO list for my car. I have "electric window lifters" :jester:

584 ELECTRIC WINDOW LIFTERS (FRONT AND REAR DOORS)

I was hoping to find my axle ratio, but MB doesn't seem to provide as much info as GM, or at least not in 96.

I've noticed my car seems to have a slight binding feeling, when I back out of a parking spot. I first thought I might have a factory LSD, but after some internet searching that seem not to be the case. I don't have the "RPO" for that, or the interior switch that I think accompanies the system..... must be electronic which surprises me, since other stuff is vacuum. There's definitely a gear oil leak, so maybe lack of fluid? No noise that I've noticed though.

Changed the gear oil. This was prompted by two things. An obvious long term leak, and a bit of an odd sensation while backing. I pressure washed the area afterwards, but it only helped clean the area up slightly. It didn't seem to change much when backing, but at least I know I've got good oil now.

I decided that since my truck has a pinion seal leak I'd top it's gear oil off. I made a bigger mess doing that than changing it on the Mercedes.

Lastly, I scrubbed the rims and tires on the Mercedes. The rims were getting dirty from me driving around town and I noticed some browning on the tires. I didn't get a picture before dark.

I'm planning on driving it to work tomorrow, for the first time. 100 miles round trip.
