I have a 1999 k2500 gmc suburbvan with the 454 and I am in the middle of a engine repair (the motor ate valves and bent 2 pushrods). I want to see the piston heads if they are damaged. I have a digital inspection camera (like a snake) and i can barley see them. I dont want to remove the heads since the exhaust is old and rusty. i looked inside from the spark plugs. Im grateful for every comment thanks

You can not replace or even lap valves with the heads on the engine. The heads have to come off. If you bent push rods, there is a reason, and the reason, or the result will be inside of the cylinders. Not to mention, you need to see inside of all of the cylinders, and all of the positions need to be inspected as well. As far removing rusty exhaust, heat is usually your friend, as long as you don't set the truck on fire, LOL. You can always remove the exhaust manifold bolts, and leave them in place, without removing the manifolds from the exhaust pipe, but then you may develop leaks, at the donut gasket. If you lucky, you need to have a machine shop rework your heads. Worse case, your looking at a title rebuild. Worse case, if your on a budget, pull the engine out, and take it apart, your self, then take it to an automotive machine shop, to do all of the machine work for you. Make a few phone calls, to your local machine shops, and ask them, about reworking the heads, and about doing a total rebuild. Some shops will do the machine work for you, and you can do the tear down, and reassembly your self, if your in a budget, and feel comfortable doing the work, installing positions, cam shaft, heads, e ECT, your self. Ask them just how far, do they want you to take the engine apart. Then you can reassemble it your self, after the machine work is complete. If your not on a budget, then a crate engine is your best bet, if it's more than just reworking the heads.

The bent pushrods just happened because the lifters failed. My plan is to just put in new pushrods and lifters. Don't know if that would work
Thanks for future awnsers

I am in the middle of a engine repair (the motor ate valves and bent 2 pushrods).
Define "ate valves".

HOW do you know it "ate valves"? What diagnosis have you done? Compression test? Cylinder leakdown test? You should be doing some diagnostic work BEFORE you pull the heads off.

I want to see the piston heads if they are damaged. I have a digital inspection camera (like a snake) and i can barley see them. I dont want to remove the heads since the exhaust is old and rusty. i looked inside from the spark plugs.
If the valves are damaged, the heads ARE coming off, or you're buying a different engine and swapping it in in place of the existing engine.

Thus the need to determine how you know the valves have been "eaten".

If it " ate " valves there is no decision on repair, the circumstances have made it for you. And if it " ate " the valves why are you hesitating?
How do know it was lifters that caused the pushrod damage? And not a seized valve?

My 99 454 bent a pushrod from a failed lifter. Replaced everything up top and put her back together. That was 150k ago, she's at 335k now. Heads have still never been off and last compression check was all 150+. I hope you have the same luck with yours.

you can get a cheap borescope inspection camera and look thru the sparkplug holes...
