I recently replaced my power steering pump on my 98 k1500 and the steering has negligible difference in feel evo vs non so I'm going to have to agree that something else is going on. I personally think you'd be wasting your time

Same here - on the three vehicles that I’ve deleted EVO I barely noticed a change.

Until you know the flow, it’s a guess. IIRC, all he changed was the pump. So, I’m focused there

But I’ve been wrong before.

I also completely forgot to mention this, but I highly recommend anyone dealing with noise, old fluid, old hoses(for flushing) of hydraulics to use seafoam trans tune.

I didnt have the same issue as OP but my hydroboost 2005 gmt800 2500hd saginaw is the OEM pump, and the fluid literally looked like poop:

Ive used trans tune in every type of gm pump from these era vehicles (P pump, TC, CB) and Ive also used it in ford C2(junk pump) which is what happens when you copy a designs parts but have no grasp of its aspects/characteritistics and wonder why your copy dont work. Anyway, my pump had poor idle assist, and was overall a bit noisier. I sucked the reservoir empty with battery bulb, then filled that gatorade bottle for show, then installed trans tune in the reservoir. I ran that for minutes and had a huge benefit in the ease of steering and the noise. I eventually pulled the fluid and did it again but used some PS fluid. your fluid is currently fresh and new, so maybe consider some trans tune in. might help

3 years ago I pumped out the tank, then refilled and drove a few miles. I kept doing that, about 6-8 times till fluid was generally clear. Since then, I swap in 2 fresh tanks of fluid a year. Just did it last week and it keeps fresh fluid in system. I use these pumps into a plastic bottle, they work great.

My 97 was acting just like yours is.I tried a new gearbox and it acted the same.I then put a pre evo gearbox, pump and hoses on and it solved the issue.I'm guessing there is an adjustment in the gearbox which is different in the EVO gearboxes. The steering felt extremely light on the wheel and seemed to oversteer with the EVO gearbox.Hope you get yours sorted out,the stiffer feel of the older style boxes is the way to go.I have a fleet of old chevs and GMCs so parts were easy to source.

I agree with @dmac65 . Go with all 96 parts and problem solved. Might want to change that rag joint too, actually I would do that first.

My 97 k1500 steering has gotten really heavy all the time. The variable assist used to work but now it’s so heavy it’s almost like manual steering in parking lots. There still is power assist but not likeminded to be. I’ve changed out all the fluid and it’s super clean but no change in steering feel. The electrical connector to the PS pump is connected. What course of action should I take to get better steering assist?

If you have EVO (which it sounds like you do), it's known for failing with age.

IIRC the usual problem is the sensor, which senses steering wheel rotation, fails.

The usual "fix" is to remove the EVO (electronically variable orifice) from the pump and replace it with a fixed orifice. Kits for doing this were once sold by GM but have been discontinued. Dorman has a kit, or you can "do it yourself" by ordering the relevant parts and installing them, basically...

- the union which contains the flow sensing orifice, which replaces the EVO in back of the pump, and

- a high-pressure line from a non-EVO equipped pickup, to replace the existing high-pressure line. I used a GATES 353950, which is for a 1996 GMT400.

The "union" is often mis-termed a "flow control valve" by the retailers so you'll probably see that term if you search for one, e.g., this one from Summit Racing:

LS Classic Series Flow Control Valves GMLS5027

The actual flow control valve in the PS pump is something completely different.
