I need some ideas on what modifications I should do to my tailgate setup. I know all of the hardware needs replacement, since the cables and latch mechanisms have seen better days. Open to pretty much any idea, like gas struts or different latch setups.

My idea would be to just fix what’s needed. It’s the simplicity of these trucks that I like.

^^^ Ditto

I think one can still find the GM cables if they look around, and there are likely 3rd-party cables to be found.

I just replaced the cables on my 1995 S10 this past Friday.

I bought the GM replacement cables for it about, oh... seven years ago. It's needed new cables since 2001.

These things can take time.

…but if you really want to spend some money and like you said “all the parts need replacement”, this is the one part I’d get. The aftermarket ones are garbage.
It’s discontinued.

I'm thinking about getting a tailgate gas strut for my truck, as well as maybe installing a different tailgate latch design. Someone I know has a 2005 Chevy Silverado that seems to close with ease, instead of having to brute force the tailgate closed, like mine. Also found the 2007-13 generation Chevy tailgate latch design to be a potential candidate.

How are either of those going to bolt into this opening? Struts, idk, I’ve had them in trucks and maybe I’m just impatient, but I always hated having to wait for the damn thing to open at its own pace.
