so as the title says, I have a '94 C1500 silverado with the HM290 transmission. it's had a whine from the transmission for a while now but recently started to get very loud. have been told it's likely the main bearing (changing the fluid made minimal difference). called up shops and was given a very high price for them to repair it, and instead advised just replacing it.

so my question now is, what are my options? is it worth attempting to replace *just* the bearing myself, find a used Getrag/NV3500 and put it in, get a reman transmission, or upgrade to an NV4500 maybe??

are there other options I'm not aware of that may be better? and what are some potential issues I'll come across with all of 'em?
