There are alot of aluminum safe products on the market if you do a little research. Formula 88 comes to mind as well as Zep 505.

Simple Green is very corrosive, especially if you don't get it all washed off. If you have a polished aluminum surface it will instantly dull it.

A different formulation.

I've been using mineral spirits to break up the initial oil/grease build up. Then clean with simple green. Finish off with brake cleaner. Perfect, no, but it's worked with all the nasty stiff I had.

This red orange crap is a bear to get off. I also found it in the left valve cover and fill spout. I'm guessing evidence of the gasket leaking.

If I had to guess, I'd say that had previously been Dex-kill.
