Buy a TPS sensor to add to your carb and then find the tach connection on the HEI distributor and feed the computer with those signals. The factory wiring diagrams will help further.

I went through the same situation. I have a 1996 Silverado 5.7L Vortec with the 4L60E tranny- converted to Edelbrock 650, performer intake, HEI distributor, headers & performance exhaust without cats. I followed a blog online for the same truck that didn't use a standalone trans controller. I installed a TPS kit and connected a signal wire from crank sensor & ign coil circuit to distributor. This gave me a tach reading. However, the tranny wouldn't shift, as if in limp mode. In the process, I damaged the torque converter and had to buy a reman 4L60E AND a US Shift controller!!!
