I am currently building a 383 for my 88 GMC stepside.

It has a 700r4 in it currently that has 40-50k km on it

The estimated power my engine will put out 400-450 hp and 450-500TQ.

Does it require a rebuild to handle the power of the new engine?

If you had already planned on an overhaul (or if it otherwise needed one), Id def do it and incorporate some choice upgrades, esp since it's already out of the vehicle. I'd also install large aftermarket cooler would certainly help it out in the meantime.

What converter stall will you be going with?

The cam I'm currently looking at reccomended a 2000-2200 stall converter.

Just trying to figure out if I'll have enough vaccum for brakes

You'll have enough for brakes.

I couldn't even imagine wasting time on a 700 if you plan on laying into it any.

Like you said above - it depends on how he drives it (I'll add "the vast majority of its road time"). If he doesnt frequently race or heavy tow/haul with it, a 700 or 4L60E can be built to otherwise handle that kind of power. Major areas of weakness are the forward drum and hydraulics - beef those up, it can hang with engines like his. If he plans on doing a lot of either of those things, Id do a TH400 or (if OD is a must for an automatic) a 4L80E with a stand-alone controller.

I've built plenty of 700R4s and 60/65Es for big blocks and built LS motors, many of them mild-moderately built but all cruisers with occasional go-fast. When power/torque exceeds 600 and/or track (or frequent towing/hauling heavy loads / working) is in the cards, TH400 or 4L80E everytime.

You should have more than enough engine vacuum.

Are you planning on doing anything to your transmission? If not, I'd def re-think that.

If you are planning to use slicks or drag radials then 100% go TH-400 or 4L80E. If your using street radials then the tires will spin before the trans gets torn apart. I wouldn’t recommend spending thousands to beef up a week trans but hey it’s your $. I would leave it stock and run it if it works fine now.

At that point I'd really consider moving away from the 700R4. Step up to building a 4L80E perhaps
