I am intrigued by this!

So, In searching for this CD player, I found a couple extremely similar looking ones:

It appears the only differences are the shape and color of the buttons and the lack of a recess along the bezel's edge, so perhaps these could be hacked in for the purposes of experimentation, assuming they are otherwise equivalent to the mythical model featured in the brochure pictured up on the first post?

If I find one that's cheap enough, I might be tempted to give it a try myself.

Also, I don't remember for sure, but I thought I saw an unused connector on the CDM. What would it be for?

CDMs with built-in amplification don't use the additional 6-pin part of the combined-20-pin connector (next to where the rear speakers connect), but others with external amplifiers used a pin or two off that for signals between the CDM and amp. On the later heads, that connector adds VSS in for speed compensated volume, and an extra E&C data line that for some reason I don't really understand, goes to the OBDII port on the GMT400s. The early CDMs don't have any other empty connectors.

And those CD players have way too many wires lol.... The tape decks only use 9, I count 14 there, so it'd have to be figured out what does what.

Hmm.. Well I did find this for a 1992 Olds 98 in OnDemand5...

Figures there's no info so I have to figure it out myself lol
C1 -D is display dimming, -C I'm pretty sure is gonna be E&C Data. -B is backlight dimming, -A is ground obviously.
C2 -E is pretty obvious, B, C, D, G are the analog audio outputs (for some reason B is there twice but I think one is supposed to be D) C2 -J is power from the radio, H is ground... A and F, I have no idea.

I saw a Delco Electronics audio service manual supplement while cruising ebay the other day, that had a lot of those same options pictured on the cover, including the cell phone. It might possibly have the info you'd need to hook the CD player up, in the event that info isn't included in the regular factory manual set. Interesting book, anyway: "Delco Electronics Sound Service - Audio Systems Diagnostic Guide 19007.03-1" https://www.ebay.com/itm/235225291271

Ooo, that's neat!

I just bought one, for maybe it'll have some useful information for mods or repairs on the standard truck stereos, and as you said, perhaps it can shed some light on the elusive pre-'95-style CD player (this book predates the stereos in the '94+ trucks by a couple years, but in principle they're probably not much different from '92 and earlier stereos, so the information in this book – particularly any info on outboard, standalone CD player units – is probably still mostly useful, if only as a general guide).
