Back in the day it was a heavy duty diesel. This should tell us how much diesels have improved in the last thirty years.
Yes sir. Plenty of 2500's, 3500's, and 3500HD's.. as well as HMMWV's.. equipped with them.

The few that I bought for my salvage yard all had bad engines. Of course, I was buying cheap trucks that had major issues, for parting out, so that's a natural. I did pass on quite a few that had bad engines and the seller still wanted a premium price because it was a diesel.

My '94 3500HD project was bought without an engine because it had blown up for a 2nd time and they pulled it for a rebuild, and while it sat on a pallet outside their shop, someone stole the engine (presumably for scrap.) No denying this truck was worked hard; it shows.

A '93 3500HD I bought was a Waste Management Corp. service truck and they apparently worked it hard enough to bend the frame. And crack the heads.

Then this ol' pewpstain that I actually do miss, the '58 Apache body-swapped onto a '94 C3500 frame.. it ran but left me walking enough times I decided I didn't want to become a 6.5td enthusiast. ;)

85-87 so should be the Detroit 6.2. You're mainly paying for the truck though, with a square body. But it does look pretty clean....

Interesting thread. I bought a used and abused '89 Silverado 4WD 6.2 light duty in 1996. It ran until 250k when it was too worn out to start without the glow plugs--even when warm. In 2000, I replaced that engine with a new leftover 6.5 non-turbo production engine; that engine now has 150k on it.
I recently replaced the starter from the original 6.2--other than that, zero problems with the engine. Transmissions have been far more problematic.
I don't have a turbo nor do I do a lot of towing; I get 19mpg day in/day out. Great truck.

Non electric, no turbo to stress it and create heat, finally not enough power to break itself.

We like the 6.5T in our 94 K2500.
Does whatever we ask of it.
We also have 2 Duramax pickups and love them.

You owe me a keyboard. Mine has drool on it. That suburban is one fine looking vehicle, and the white truck is my next favorite to the gmt400.
I seem to have vehicularitus. I see cool vehicles that I have absolutely no use for, but I still want them!
Thanks for sharing!

My first was an 84 suburban 6.2 once i got rid of the troublesome fuel filter and housing it was a beadt with its 4x4
The next was a 94 eclb 8600lb K2500
the stepper motor was nfg on the pump,. i changed the pump over to a 5068 big down pipe with welded closed wastegate, and an old westers diesel chip,. i took it up into the northwest territories 2 winters and it was old reliable,.. winterfront on and belly tarp too,. it'd run 12-14 hrs at 1100 waiting to go back to camp,.
i pulled a full set of 46000lb rockwells back from ft mcmurray back rearend in the truck and front drive in a little 6x8 bike trailer,. grossing 14 780lbs
2500 miles,. easy money.
frame was tired suspemsion done,. so i parked it. I bought a 99 suburban and it had 3:73's,. i pulled the back 3;42's out of the pickup and the burban did winter duty in ft st john, slave lake and chetwynd. i Sold the burban 2 months ago.
I always carried a spare pmd on a heat sink, if the main give up i simply took 2-3 mins and switched to the spare.
Things i've learned,. 6.5's work better with 3:42's,. the turbo is too small on the exducer to work over 2500,.builds heat . Use bosch duraterm glow plugs with good/new wiring,..The factory fuel manager is a joke,. i used cat fuel filters good for 2 microns, and they don't let air in. always have the started bolted down with the tail bracket,. otherwise it breaks bolts blocks and flywheels
I did 4 corner cooling on the heads dumping back into the rad from the single T stat housing i shortened the thermistor spring on the clutch fan so the fan came on early and always ran 195 stats,. cleaning the rad out properly and never having heat troubles
let it warm up for 2-3 mins,. let it idle down for 2 mins and i always ran howes fuel additive religiously,
Nobody ever seems to give leeway to 25-30 yr old wring or fuel lines being weakened over time, These old rattlers will do well with some preventative maintenance
I had a 6.5 for over 20 years,. good little motors.
