I getting replacement door seals and I noticed a bit of surface rust under the original rubber. I think I could just sand off most of it hit with some rust stop and prime and paint it. Does this sound like a viable option? I just don't want to have more serious rot occur in the future because that spot seems like it would be a booger to repair. It's the part where the rubber actually attaches to with adhesive.

sounds like a plan... just give it time to fully dry/cure before adding the weathersrtip back in

If it were mine, sand/grind it out as much as possible, rust converter of some sort, then something like POR 15, then paint and then put the weather strip back on.

Maybe some pictures would help see how bad it really is.

Be sure to sand down to clean metal. Even the tiniest pinhole rust areas will rust under any coating you put over it. The POR-15 that @Drunkcanuk mentioned is great. It seals up the area pretty well.
