what month were they made
if they are 7th month of the year they are the next year if they are 6th you are splitting hairs
At this point I am lost ( Home Brew). I ordered our Chevy in March 1996 from Fort John Wayne ( some humor). Is there a passenger airbag? I know when I pilot the Chev, sometimes, there is a Windbag on my Flank, Starboard? All Good

Check your airbag sensor for damage.
They are made of plastic. Over time they swell & crack from being pelted by the sand & snow as you drive. I sell lots of them to people needing to pass inspections. I might sit on them for a few yrs, but it gets to a point that you can't buy them & all of the local used ones are just as bad.

My trucks are old enough they don't need to pass inspections anymore. I pulled the airbag fuses from the trucks. Swapped in cubbies for the passenger airbag. Swapped the steering wheel & airbag for 2500/3500 non-airbag steering wheel. I could drive to the inspection station right now & they wouldn't know that the bags are missing.
Maybe, but I'm thinking it's short since the deployment happended while the truck was parked over night.

I'm going to have it properly scanned soon.

@jjester6000 Did you ever figure out what faults were present in your air bag system?

I had the air bag warning light come on in my '97 Suburban again tonight for the first time in a long while. I cycled the ignition and the warning light was operating properly again, but I remembered what happened here and didn't want to completely ignore it this time. I connected my Tech 2 clone and got no present SIR codes, and only one history code...

According to the '97 service manual this is an air bag warning lamp circuit fault that's triggered when the commanded state of the lamp doesn't match what the module sees for more than 400 milliseconds. I haven't gone through the diagnostic table completely yet, but given how infrequently this happens I'm wondering if it's something silly like a tired old light bulb in the cluster. Or maybe some other part of the circuit is tired and doesn't like me starting the truck immediately while it's in the middle of the self test that flashes the bulb seven times. I'm going to make it a point to wait a few seconds before starting the engine after turning the key to "Run" to give the warning lamp test some time to complete and see if that makes any difference.

Semi-related thought/question: What is the simplest and safest way to disable the air bags completely if needed? Is it really as easy as pulling fuse number 10 out of the interior fuse box?

I never did unfortunately, for the time being, I just pulled the fuse so I don't get knocked out while driving.

I'm sure I could, there was an option to in the menu. I didn't try though.
You’d think you could since it’s not there anymore, just a notification that there was maybe an issue once. But I understand the “you can’t be careful enough” approach too!

You could always go my route and remove everything airbag-related from the truck entirely lol.
