Well I found the little guy. Looks like somebody repaired the cargo lights previously, but either left this one disconnected, or damaged it while reassembling.

If you can't tell, its in the channel under the driver's door sill.

I didn't need to go digging above the steering column for c298, just need to replace some badly rusted screws, so its not a pain to remove the trim if I have to get in here again.

Hehehe, what my very first reply said ;) j/k glad you got it figured out!
Yeah, I know. I tried to pull that out when you first recommended it, but the screws holding the trim in place had the heads completely stripped. I figured I would go there if I could more easily check other places first. The irony of that statement is not lost on me, now.

I really wish american markets had more options for robertson head (square drive) screws. They don't get destroyed the way phillips do, and when they do they are still easy to remove.

Edit: There was also like a pound of dirt and sand underneath that trim. I vacuumed it out while I was in there. Amazing how much accumulates over the years.
