I recently bought an early 1988 Chevy C1500 back in the spring and have been trying to figure out how to solve DTC 13. The SES light comes on every time I drive the truck, however I have discovered that if I really dog on it hard the light will go out. That tells me that the sensor isn't reaching 600F for some reason. I started off with replacing the O2 from the get go as it was original-looking, and being almost 37 years old and 220,000 miles it certainly won't hurt to spend the $18 on one. That did not resolve the problem, so next thing I tried was replacing the blown out donut gasket thinking it couldn't hold enough residual heat to warm the sensor, but that didn't solve it either. Why would it not be getting hot enough? Perhaps a resistance issue with the sensor itself? Maybe it's just a bad one? It's a Bosch brand sensor and I purchased it off of Amazon. I've yet to check any voltages, but since the light will go out once the sensor gets hot I've about convinced myself it's not a voltage issue. 13 has been the only code so far.

1988 Scottsdale, 350/700R4. Bought it for $800. Was parked up about a year because the water pump had gone out. It's pretty much a one-owner truck; I bought it from the original purchaser's daughter. It runs pretty good! We are going to fix it up for my son for his first truck. I live in Arkansas so no rust.

Have you traced the wires back yet? It could be pinched or mouse bitten or just corroded.

Is your truck running at operating temp. ? Should be around midrange on temp. gauge . If you have access to a scanner wouldn't hurt to see what the trucks ecm is thinking also .

Not yet, but that's my next step I believe. What part of the wire I can see that's not in the plastic loom looks fine.

As far as I can tell. I've not checked it but the gauge reads just below 210, and I put a new 195 degree thermostat in it when I changed the water pump so I'd assume it's getting warm enough. I have an IR thermometer I can use to check. I do not have a scan tool but I really need to invest in one. I have a 1995 K1500 also, as well as a 1989 Dodge truck that's TBI. It would be plenty useful.

On these earlier ECMs, just because the light goes out, you'll still see the stored downtime code until you disconnect the battery or 30 - 40 key cycles. Get a scanner and see what kind of feedback you're getting.

Here's a log from a 1227747 ECM like yours using TunerPro RT. Note the red line on top. A "normal" O2 sensor working with a "normal" ECM will jump above (rich) and below (lean) 450 mV (Stoich). If your not seeing that, you need to check wiring/connections before throwing more parts at it. See the 2 blips in RPMs there? That turned out to be a bad ICM.

That is some excellent information. Thank you for sharing that. Sounds like it’s time to pull the trigger on some diagnostic equipment. Going to go do some studying on TunerPro to see what I can learn about it.

I did put a new distributor in it and also rebuilt the TBI right after I bought it. It runs much better now. The engine in this truck seems to be in better condition than the one in my 1995, and they both have about the same amount of miles on them.

I did check temp earlier after a trip to town, and at the water neck my IR thermometer was seeing 190-200.

The question is, what does the ECM see from the CTS next to the TStat. That's the one that feeds the 'puter.

Great question. I have a known good CTS in the garage that I could throw in real quick, just to see if anything changes. I did order an ALDL cable so hopefully I can do some real diagnosis in a few days to see what's going on.

Good start but, that doesn't tell you what the ECM is seeing. You may have a bad connection, wires, etc. I'd wait until I got the ALDL cable and can see exactly what's going on.
