It almost seems like a no brainer. but pros and cons and cost.

I have a set a ported 193, dropped them off at machine shop for a valve job and maybe one seat I nicked.
I should hear back from them in a few days, on actual cost. quick estimate was about $500 or under.

A local guy races super stock and is changing out his Dart Iron eagles 65cc, 165 runners. hes asking 1k
it has Manley valves, ARP 7/16 rocker studs ,comp cam guide plates, Howard's Retainers Crower springs for .550 lift.

First question, would the tbi intake bolt onto the heads, without enlarging the center holes?

Is it possible to remove the guide plates and 7/16 studs and go with stock 3/8 screw in and self aligning rockers? or is that a machine shop deal? (I have a set of comp cam magnum ultra pro roller rockers already)

Obvious the Iron eagles are meant for racing and way higher rpm but would they make good torque in the lower rpms with a smaller cam? (278/288, Lift .421/.444,)

Can the tbi, and mildly ported 3704 intake supply enough air for the heads to use properly?

So $500 for the 193 bolt them on and done, or 1k+ for iron eagles and start swapping out springs, studs?

Sounds like a no brainer $500 ready to go vs $1000 and you have to spend more money to make them work for your application.

All depends on what you are using your truck for. The 193s freshened up will be good for most general use and hauling. Sometime keeping it simple is the most cost effective. Those heads ported and some headers make a decently torquey engine.

Are you doing a cam upgrade? Keep in mind with a different cam like you listed the stock TBI system will not adapt well. If you were doing a full rebuild or overhaul on the engine and already planning on a cam upgrade then it would be the right time to swap out to the heads. This could quickly go down a rabbit hole of upgrades with different intake, upgraded throttle body ect.

Probably not unless they are for 87 - 95 TBI engines. Older heads will need to be modified.

Yes, Most heads are drilled and tapped for 7/16" studs. You simply need 7/16" NC (I forget the pitch count, maybe 14) X 3/8"-24 studs. You will need to get the correct height studs. If you have to use washers, they need to be hardened.

Obvious the Iron eagles are meant for racing and way higher rpm but would they make good torque in the lower rpms with a smaller cam? (278/288, Lift .421/.444,)
With 165 Runners, you should be fine.

Yes, you'll probably have to jack up the fuel pressure depending on the cam. You may even have to go to a bigger Throttle Body like a bored 46mm or 50mm from a 7.4L. Then bore your 3704 to 48 or 50mm.

Either way, you should tune it or, have someone do it for you. I have a set of 193s sitting on the shelf - they make great boat anchors, for a small boat but, that's me

It's your budget, how much do you realistically wanna spend and what kind of performance do you want.

The Darts do have an advantage when it comes to durability. The 193s are great heads for a truck application and even better properly ported, but those Darts are a much thicker casting and less prone to cracking.

i built a 355 with flat top pistons, pocket ported TBI heads and tight .035" quench~10.2:1, made 325 fwhp and 395 fwtq on the engine dyno. definitely hits a wall in the 4000ish rpm range but other wise a fun little engine. can always swap heads later if youre not happy.

yes that is the exact problem,
the motor is out ,it measured out good. so its getting an overhaul, new bearings, gaskets, oil pump, timing chain..etc and yes I have a new summet 1102 cam, with new gm lifters ready to go.
the heads are the hangup.
Original plan was the ported 193s- easy install, i had them and fairly inexpensive.
But my fear is the shop's actual quote me far more than the 500ish they had thought on visual inspection.
If so then a different set would be needed... then the eagles appeared today..... rabbit hole indeed.

Yes, the 3704 was already bored out to 50mm holes when I got it.
I'm currently using the stock sized throttle body.
As for tuning, using EBL for motor and stock 7427 computer for trans control.

My $.02 either go with the ported TBI heads or if buying aftermarket go with new Dart Iron Eagles or Eddy Performers designed for the 87-95 intake angle and Centerbolt VCs. Keep it simple and whatever your budget allows.

What is your goal for the truck? If you're wanting to build a hot motor, the Darts would probably be the best option. If you're wanting a solid daily driver, go with the 193s. If money's not a problem, buy both.
