Steering wheel off 90°

Rag joint on borgeson aftermarket steering shaft tore while I was at my camp. Couldn’t find one at auto store and was in a pinch to get it corrected. I found a mechanic who works in Saturdays to replace the shaft with an OEM one. My problem is, for some unknown reason, the new shaft wouldn’t line up with the part coming out of firewall. He had to use a knuckle to make it work. Old shaft could be spun on gearbox to straighten steering wheel. New one is slotted & only fits one way. Using the knuckle threw it off 90°. What is a good solution?

I went online & figured out the new shaft is for 95 & up models.

Is there a rag-joint or a U-joint at the bottom of the steering shaft, near the steering gearbox?

Can the steering wheel be removed and turned 90 degrees or is there a one way only the splines fit on? Never tried this on this year truck but that’s the first thing to look into.

You may damage the air bag’s wire spool when you turn the steering to one extreme or the other.

1994 has driver’s air bag, yes?

Haven't looked into that yet but crossed my mind.
