Went to replace my r4 compressor, on my 1992 GMC k2500 6.5 diesel, and noticed the ACDelco compressor came with flat suction and discharge ports. My hose block has a stepped discharge port, which means it sits higher than the suction port!!! Apparently they switched to this design in 1993. The only problem is the 1993 and later r4 style compressors come with a different style clutch switch, so even though that solves the hose issue i wont be able to connect the power cable. Why is my truck this way with a 1992 and earlier clutch switch but a 1993 and later stepped hose block? Im losing my mind! I have read about people having to use the washers when their hose block is flat or non-stepped. But what do i do if my block is stepped and the only compressors available with my style clutch switch have non-stepped same depth suction and discharge ports?

Time for new hoses? Maybe give 4seasons a call monday and see if they have one that fits your hoses?

You still use the stepped washers.

Photos? In-focus, nicely cropped and resized as needed.
Sorry for the bad pics, my issue is i have a R-134 compressor, with the STEPPED hose block design found on 1993 and later compressors. However, i cannot install one of these later units because i have the old R12 style clutch switch, and every compressor i buy with the correct style switch has a FLAT hose block. Which it is not possible to use washers because it physically wont fit. I have ordered yet another compressor from UAC, not thrilled at all to go with cheap communist crap but i just need something that fits. If i must i will swap hoses to the flat block design or go sanden even

Don't know if this will help, but I keep it handy. I'm convinced someone was smoking crack when they came up with this crap. I've not seen a GM compressor leak with the old style, manifold o-rings. Fixed a non-issue.

the ACDelco compressor came with flat suction and discharge ports

The ACDelco new R4 compressor I bought back in 2016 came with a packet of parts which included the stepped washers that others mentioned (above). The one you bought should have come with them as well, including IIRC instructions for their use.

I got the "GM GENUINE 1520189 (New) Contains No Oil (Dry); w/ Clutch" R4 compressor.

The stepped washers in the kit look like this (below). Just search Google for "r4 compressor washer kit"
