Distributor problem am lost

My best guess from over here is that the spring loaded conductive carbon button that goes between the cap-mounted coil
& the spinning rotor underneath is MIA, and this missing component would lead to this kind of high-voltage carnage:

Note: The large cap HEI system is the unofficial Honey Badger of ignition systems.

It just doesn't care. It will not be denied.

When replacing the cap & rotor, double check that you have all the parts necessary for
solid, reliable, service. (See attached. From here.)

FWIW I'm a big fan of the big cap HEI system. Have a lot of respect for what it can accomplish,
both inside & outside of the combustion chamber. :0)

Got a gap between the rotor and cap and tried to create mini lightning bolts within your cap.

When you replace the cap, Make sure to smear dielectric grease on the rubber washer that surrounds that rotor button under the coil.
