You hook the pressure gauge directly to the fuel line coming from the pump, most likely at the filter connection. This eliminates the FPR from the equation and let's you know exactly what the pump is putting out.

Hmm that makes sense ill look into getting a fitting that I can hook to my fuel line before my filter. I wouldn't need to pinch off any lines right?

Right, just hook it up and turn the key on.

Well another update. Still haven't gotten time to do the fuel pump but its been acting really weird. The other day the pump got really quiet the truck had allot of power i tested the fuel pressure it was 50 at idle and 60 under throttle. This is the second time its done this. I understand that's still low but why would one day the pump put out better numbers and the be back to weak. I cleaned the ground for the pump on the frame and it didn't change anything. Still going to do a pump but may i have a deeper issue?

The pumps generally die due to bearing failure from overheating or age. That's why it's so noisy, and why it would make sense for it to quiet down and work better, at least for a time. You could do a voltage drop test to see if it is just an low voltage issue, but my bet is on the pump.

Oh, another thing. When you change the pump, it would be wise to take the time to clean out the tank. Drain the remaining fuel out, power wash the bottom and sides thoroughly, and rinse with some isopropyl alcohol or spray carb cleaner. I've spoken with reps for a couple of manufacturers, and they say the most common cause of in warranty failure is from contaminated fuel tanks plugging the pump screen and sock with garbage. May help your pump life out a bit, or at least give it a better chance of survival.

My pump got really quiet on my 98, then it would start only with a jump, then only with starting fluid, put in a new ac delco pump, and no more starting issues, and its quieter than the one it replaced, can barely hear it with the door open

And I checked out the bottom of the tank while I changed it, and it looked spotless, no dirt or sludge that I could see
