Well... I'm guessing got hot and as you mention 'tougher turning over', probably mains are spun and jamming the turn. Sorry but not good. 4.3 is great motor so it would be worth rebuilding though if needed.

That is a complete bummer, sorry that happened.
A couple years ago, I watched a co-worker drive out of his parking spot as I was walking near where his truck, a '98 1500 4x4, was parked. When I got closer, I saw a huge trail of oil from his truck. I called him and told him what I saw and to look at his oil pressure gauge. He said it was on zero and he was in line at the local car wash a block away. It left a mess in their driveway, but he shut it off before any damage was done. He was right at the entrance to the drive-thru, so everybody in line had to back out and his truck had to be pushed out and towed. One of the original cooler lines had popped out of the oil filter adapter. What a mess!
