Guys, the heavy duty trucks still ran turbo 400 trans into the 1991. I owned a 2wd 2500 that was a 90 with a factory turbo 400 trans. GM was smart enough to keep the 700R4 out of the heavy duty trucks.

interesting 91 model year should be 4l80e not 400 op claims to have a 3 speed manual unless that got swaped in at some I think the op has a sm465 and the shift pattern is confusing him

An overwhelming majority of GM HD trucks, SUVs and Vans, including commercial vehicles, received the 4L80E beginninng in 1991. There may have been a few sub-models/variants that received TH400s into 1992 but I'm not aware of any TH400s persisting beyond that year.

I hear ya, but despite what “should”be GM likely used up the last Turbo 400s in 90 and 91 to use up the last of them.

you could be right about gm wanting to use up all the 400s that they still had left but for some reason I want to say that the 400 lived on in the (p series p30) longer then the full size trucks and suvs but could be wrong

Sorry guys I missed the 3 speed “manual” part! My NV-4500 is listed as a 3 speed with overdrive and a “low 1st gear”. And yes he should have a NV-4500 not a 3 speed in that year if it’s manual.

not in 89 nv4500 came out some time in 91 he has a sm465 there is a chance that it could be a hm290/5lm60 but I do not think any would confuse that with a 3 speed gm did not start nv3500 till 93 and I am seeing mixed year for nv4500 stat some say 91 some say 92 I would say mid or late 91 is most likely the right answer

That truck would have a SM465. Essentially a 3spd with a granny low. I do not know of anyone that actually uses 1st gear in them unless they are starting off uphill with a heavy load or trailer. Even the shift knob on most of them has L-1-2-3-R.

Hey Everyone, my name is Ashton from Iowa. I recently acquired a fairly clean ‘89 3/4 ton Chevy with a stock 350 small block. It currently has the 3 speed manual which I find to be horrendous for anything above 55mph. I’m looking into the idea of a 4l80 swap and was wondering if anyone has a list of parts I’ll need to replace in order to make this happen. This is just a project truck so I’ve got all the time in the world to trace parts, I’m just trying to come up with a game plan in advance so when I get to that point there are few/no surprises. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!
