If the connector has a bent pin, the ECM will think it's a bad part. That's why you " verify " the data you have. Or it will lead around in circles. It's not the final answer, it data to help you get the answer.

I've checked the connector as well no corrosion and no pins are bent

WHAT code is "coolant temperature"
WHAT IS THE CODE NUMBER that the computer has stored? 14? 15? Something else?

The engine coolant temperature, right next to the thermostat the part in the picture
That's the coolant temperature sensor.

And I'm changing it cause that's what the scan tool keeps telling me
1. Do you have an actual scan tool, or just a crappy "code reader". There is a HUGE difference.

2. The code does not tell you to change the sensor. It tells you that there's a problem with that circuit--which MIGHT be a defective sensor, it might be defective connectors or wire harness, or it might be a defective computer. It could also be a failed thermostat that doesn't keep the engine at a normal operating temperature. It might be indicating a low coolant level that doesn't get the temperature sensor "wet".

More diagnosis needed. A scan tool or scan tool simulator will be helpful.

Download the service manual set for your vehicle, follow the diagnostic procedure for the code you're getting.

Any chance you pulled the distributor? If you did, perhaps a tooth off. If not how much slack in rotor movement. I would recommend change out distributor as it comes with electronic control unit that might be cause of problem.

Did you check base idle (disconnect wires at firewall)?

Condition of crank pulley for rotted damper rubber.

As Schurkey said coolant low , wiring, connections ? What about continuity ? You can have voltage and ground but is it going thru sensor or connection ? Does voltage or resistance measurement change from where it starts to where it is read by ecm ? Is it the same reading or measurement when measured with a dvm and compared to scan data ?
