So I have been chasing down a code 42 and no luck, until maybe today when I decided to remove the ac unit and dig under the dash and pull out the ECM. I think it looks burnt at one of the pin connections (see pic). I am wondering what ECM I can use to replace it with. I need to get it smogged so I am worried that the smog shop will be able to tell that I replaced it. I dont want ro flag myself with the California DMV since getting this referee smog tag was such a pain in the ass. The engine I have is an SBC 350 5.7 TBI crate engine and it is mounted to a 700r4 tranny. I believe the engine i have is was what came in a 1989 C1500 truck. My Jeep is a 1982 so all analog except for emission and engine management. Are all ECMs for all sbc 350 tbi 5.7s the same? Does the replacement need to be from a 4x4 or does the the donor car need to have had the same 700r4 tranny? Do these 1989 ECMs store Vin info that the DMV records? Thanks for the help! Also if someone has a matching ECM for sale please let me know, I have attached a pic of my ECM, numbers are a little worn.

1227747 is the part number you are looking for, you will have to transfer your prom to replacement, unless lucky enough that numbers on prom match. This ecm doesn't store vin or mileage. You will also need to ck your ecm terminal connections

Thanks for the reply!! So I took a soft wire brush to the terminals both male and female. I then plugged and unplugged the termal sever times to clean off those pins and port holes. I reset the code and drove it to work and zero issues no code 42 yet. So I of two things happened when I pulled it out it moved the wire that was grounding out and or the residue was breaking the connection. The tan bypass wire led to the holes where that spark or corrosion residue formed. I think i will replace it anyway just incase it is indeed damaged. So is my eprom number on the label as well? I am worried it could have been damaged as well when the box shorted out. Also what do you mean by Ck the terminal connections? Thanks!!

The prom numbers need to match, if starts and runs and no cel on probably good to go, by cycling connectors several times helped and by cleaning that also helped, if keeping vehicle not a bad idea to have a backup ecm handy just make sure that prom numbers match if not will have to change prom . After cleaning wire and no breaks in insulation and connectors are good , ck continuity if less than 0.1 ohms should be good also, make sure you zero your dvm before cking. Cking terminal connection is done by cking the amount of drag are amount of pressure to connect and disconnect terminal usually cking female side as they have the tab in them that is pushing against male terminal. Need to be ckd individually if you can feel drag or resistance while cycling terminal should be good if no drag or resistance then that terminal needs to be removed and re tension. Hope it's not confusing . Best of luck
