What process are you going to use for the cutting ....sandpaper , grits , chemical cutting liquids only etc ?
I have to do some research on it.
But plan for now is start with 2K grit wet sanding (lightly) and then ?????
That's where the research comes in. Lol

Probably pick up some kind of dual action buffer machine and the associated juice and pads that goes with it. Then polish and wax accordingly.

Not dropping big bucks on a machine, I've looked, they can be well over $500+. A few hundred for a Simonize brand will probably be what I end up with. And probably get Mother's or Maguire's stuff to go with it.

But I'm all ears if you have any suggestions.
Budget conscious suggestions....LOL

Exactly!!! Lol
For me, the hardest part is going to be pulling the money out of the bank!!! Lol
I know I could buy one online right now for $2000. But that's just the motor.
But if I go pull one myself from a wrecking yard, $350-400 IF there is one there. It's and hour to the nearest one,

Nothing at Ed's??

For your cut and buff you can start with 1200 and work up to 2000, which will polish out with good compound. OR better yet, finish with 3000 trizact but it's pricey.

I don't like to wetsand, if I ever cut and buff i use the orbital sander with a foam interface pad, and go 1500, 2000, the 3000.

Last time I checked Ed's, they had one 6.0 but it had a knock the note on the computer said. Told them to call me if anything else came in, they haven't called.
And woman was working there at the time, so maybe she told them not to call me!!! Lol

And they are around 2k in price for motor and trans. Bucks and others in the city are $800ish. Not paying someone a $1000 to pull a motor and trans. Ill put the sweat equity in! Lol

And maybe I am stubborn but woman worked there for almost a year and then got laid off, so maybe I harbor some feelings towards that as well! Lol

Thanks for the info....I'll look into the different methods that are out there.

Lol wow thats a good profit for pulling an engine, some of their prices over there are a bit out of whack. I may have spoke to your wife on the phone if she worked at Ed's in the last 3 yrs. Small world lol

Ya, and that's cheaper than in the city.
Kennedale on 50th was right around $2800if I remember correctly just for the motor, no wiring or ECM. Let alone a trans. And a 5.3 was only a few hundred less.....and they wanted $300-400 for core charge on top of that!!!

I'm all for someone making money, I really am. But gotta draw the line somewhere. I'll take a day off in the middle of the week of I have to, just to beat the weekend warrior guys.
And would still be money ahead.

Ya...she was there for a year, covered for the "shop" admin for a bit then went to parts. So certainly could have chatted.
Definitely a small world!!

Just had a stupid (maybe) thought pop in my head.
My kid has a buddy with about a half dozen 95+ OBS's. Wonder what yanking a Vortec out.
Maybe toss a cam in it, get the appropriate intake and adapter to run the TBI still. Maybe a EBL Flash 2 to get it running nice.

I can still use my headers, trans (4L60) that's essentially brand new a few thousand KMs ago.
Would redo the exhaust up from a 2 1/4" to probably a 3", would all need to be redone regardless with a LS. Maybe some injectors as needed.

Or swap the whole thing, toss a MPFI and cam still. Get the black box tuned.
My buddy has a 4L60E he doesn't need, I believe all the kids trucks are 4x4.

Could probably get the motor from him for a few hundred. Would probably be into everything else I need for less than a grand.

Still a swap, still "old school", still have balls low down and still more power.

Thoughts?????

Gonna have to do a deep dive into the Vortec swap sticky.

Unfortunatey I dont have alot of experience ...BUT coming from a can I think if it were me I would be very conservative like you are with your grits and sneak up on it.....rather than going in initially with a more aggressive grit... I honestly dont know if a can application can take a 1200 or 1500 to start . Maybe some more experienced guys can tell you how aggressive you can go with an out of a can clear application. Wish I was more help.

I would probably treat it just like a regular spray job. Wet with 1500 on a soft block (very careful on and near the creases), then buff the snot out of it with a standard buffer and good cutting compound. Use the orbital with an orange or yellow pad and good polish from there. Top it off with a black pad and decent wax or glaze.

Would you be doing this instead of the LS or just as something to get you more power until the LS conversion?

I say this: get out and drive it. Build the motor you want on a stand and just enjoy your truck. You’ve waited so long man.

Edit for clarity: I just don’t wanna see this thing sit around anymore lolol. I want you to enjoy your hard work!
