95 C1500, 2WD 5.7 (I only recently bought the truck and have not figure which trans it has yet, but I gather that the 4l60e is most likely)

At idle, when in Park or Neutral there is a terrible screech (about as ugly sounding as engaging the starter on a running motor), but then if I shift in to any drive gear the noiuse goes away. This accoured suddenly - ie there was no noise when I parked, thent heenext day it was there yelling at me. I have not driven it since this happened, I wanted to make sure I would not cause damage driving it like this.

Google has not help me alot. I did check the fluid, it looks high while cold - above the hot mark even), and once warmed up it looked only very slightly over the hot mark.
I have read that it might be a bearing or maybe the pump in the converter, but nothing definite.

Has anyone experienced this? Any ideas on anything else I can check on?

Well it occured to me, after describing the noise "engaging the starter on a running motor" that since Park and Neutral are both where you can engage the starter that maybe my inition switch is getting stuck on. I'm going to explore that theory.
