I’d like to make it as plug and play as possible after the swap

I contacted quite a few companies. Some never replied others said they couldn’t/wouldn’t do it. Only one said they could.

Essentially it would be a base tune 2002 express fan.

Fans enabled 200 on off at 195. Fan 2 slightly higher.
Disable VATs
Enable tow haul mode
Delete rear o2s.

I read somewhere that alternator codes also need to be changed/deleted and the EGR needs to be changed/deleted unplugged. Is there anything else I need to talk to the tuner about for this?

I just did this on my truck. I paid $150 for the ECM and connectors. I had a buddy re-pin the ECM for me only because I'm super short on time. I have access to EFI live, so I'm already in the tuning process. Justin at Black Bear is custom tuning the ECM for me. They are great to work with. My only complaint is they are slow to respond. With any tuning service, you have to license the ECM to the tuning software and use some sort of flashing device to update the tune. I have access to a V2 Flash Scan, so I only have to pay the $125 for the EFI Live License. Then, I have to pay Justin's tuning fee. This will be the same story with HP Tuners. Black Bear uses EFI Live, so you will need to purchase or put down a deposit for the Cal Scanner that is linked to their tuning hardware. You can get it running for the $200ish range, but it wont be custom tuned to your vehicle.

That being said, its worth it. The 0411 makes the engine run so much better. I'm not even tuned yet and its already a night and day difference from my custom tuned black box ecm.

I just got my 0411 ECM tuned by Justin at Black Bear. Holy crap she runs amazing! Its like a completely different truck. Its got more power now than before with the black box ECM.

This swap is 147% worth it!

I can build you a base tune .bin file for free. You'll need to buy a special obd2 adapter (~$60) to flash it using PCM Hammer (free), you'll need a windows laptop with Bluetooth to run the program. The program is finnicky but will work after enough tries.

Ideally you want to flash the computer using a bench harness, you can buy one on amazon for ~$20. Otherwise you can hook your truck up to a charger/trickle charger while flashing.

PM or reply to me if you're interested.

You can keep the EGR if you want to use it or it can be tuned out.

I would also edit the power enrichment tables, adjust trans shift points, and make other smalls changes to improve drivability and performance.

After years of debating on doing the swap I finally did it. I am very happy with the results!

The tune I got is a modified stock tune from a 2002 express van. The immediate differences I saw are smoother idle, smoother shifts, and overall better drive ability. I had the secondary o2s deleted and the fans run through the pcm. Other then that we followed the instructions per lextechs spreadsheet (HUGE HELP).

While doing the swap I did find that a ground wire had broken which would explain some of the odd ball electrical things going on the last little bit. So I fixed that too.

My truck is a 96 and I had done the transmission ground fix TSB described in this post:

Since I had done that I had reversed this. Otherwise the ground wire that goes to c2-1 won’t be available and the wire that would be there may or may not be there from factory. If it is there the spreadsheet says to use it for your ac ground in c2-55.

The whole thing took me about 3.5 hours I really took my time and double checked every wire. I’m glad I did because I caught myself a couple times making a mistake (usually putting a wire in the wrong connector)

I wished I had undid the wire loom further back as I could have made the wires more organized but I didn’t realize that until a bit late in the game. I’ll have to see how I feel about it at a later time.

I want to wire my manual overide switch back in for my fans just in case. I think I have it figured out In my head. I have a 2fan 2 speed controler that was running the fans previously. I want to hook it and the temp sensor into my trans cooler fan. Then run the high side of the controler to the rad fans. The trans shouldn’t get hot enough to run the high side of the controller and if I need to override everything the switch would turn all 3 fans on. The only thing I wonder is if anything would get hurt if I had the switch on AND the pcm turned the fans on?

Anyway I’m very happy with the tuning and feel Dave w charged a very fair price. He is a moderator and can be contacted athttp://gearhead-efi.com/
