I know there’s already 600+ threads in detail about peoples builds but I can’t wrap my head around the numbers clearances etc, I have a 97 C1500 2wd 4l60e 3.42 open differential. It currently has a cat delete and other than that completely stock drivetrain. I’m looking for an Engine Build/template that’s not too expensive to start out but later on I can always add onto for drag racing ( not really but “ straight line racing ” ) . I have 0 knowledge besides the few things I know already about this year like the hard tuning pcms and the ol spider injection. I’d like to have a list of a valve train setup ( that’s tested proven ) that can work with the stock vortec heads, the spider injection, possibly the stock pcm if not a reccomendation for tuning the stock pcm, and a moderate cam. I do not have a cam in mind or really anything part specific.

I would start with finding another block to build up while you drive the truck. Look for a roller cam block. Spend good money on the machine work on the block. Otherwise you are starting without a solid foundation. A fresh bore, align honed mains, deck milled perpendicular to the main line, lots of stuff goes into building an engine right. If money allows look at a 383 stroker kit however only after you get good flowing heads fit into the budget. Attention to detail is key, read some engine building books and do your homework. Things like ensuring your piston to head quench distance is optimal, degreeing the cam, and matching up the camshaft with the static compression ratio in order to hit the desired dynamic compression to match the fuel octane you plan to use.
