Also I still have a lot of valvetrain noise. I bought a Lisle mechanics stethoscope that really works. I ran it with the left valve cover off, again, and identified the #1 and #5 exhaust rockers as the sources. It's a sharp tinking sound, like holding a pushrod like a drumstick and tapping it on concrete. All rockers had good oil flow across them. The sound is also distinctly different than when I backed off a rocker with it running, which was more of a deep thump like a brass hammer against the cylinder head.

I reused the stock lifters off the 20k-mile 99 donor engine. My theory is the stock lifters can't handle the steep rams of the comp XE cam profile, and maybe the plungers are getting slammed and bottoming out.

Has anyone used the Comp 900 lifters for Gen 6/8.1 they recommend for the XE cams? They are only $250 for the set and they work with the stock dogbone locators.

My dually sometimes gets a little bit of a sewing machine sound to it. I'd like if it didn't, but I'm getting a lot of lift for such a short duration. 212/228 with .52X/.53X" IIRC.

My experience with those Comp lifters was they rattled like a diesel. Talked to comp tech, response was “yeah they are noisy”. Installed the GM rollers and solved all but one exhaust ticking. I think that one needs the guide plate aligned better.

It's only a couple of lifters that are noisy though. The Comp 900 lifters are really cheap, and apparently noisy too. How about a set of their normal hydraulic link bar rollers, like the 854? Yikes, about $600 for a set.

It's been over 2 months since my last post. Things are actually pretty good. Black bear got it right finally. No audible pinging anymore. My biggest concern going into the summer was if the dual electric fans with the variable speed controller could keep it cool in 115f and phoenix traffic. Answer is yes. They are better than the stock fan if anything, as they can run at full speed at idle. I still haven't towed a fully loaded trailer uphill in 115 yet, but that should still be ok. The fan in the stock shroud actually becomes a restriction when moving. The electric fans allow wind to blow through the rad in the areas not covered by the fans.

Also I was really stressing about the valvetrain noise. When I got the ecm back from black bear the last time, I did several wot data logging passes through the gears. The data looked good so I sent the tuning cable back to bb. And for whatever reason, the wot runs 'fixed' the lifters. Noise dropped off a ton, down to normal header sounds. I'm really happy with it.

Not so quick, the clutch fan adds a ton of airflow volume when it engages even at 75-85 mph. I can watch the temperature gauge fall like a rock when it does.
