Hey guys newbie here. I have a 1995 350 tbi on a stand I have been messing around with that ran when pulled. Been replacing all the typical wear items and accessories. The driver side valve cover took some damage from falling off the stand when the guy that gave it to me had a few too many ales one night. Aside from that no other damage except he pulled the distributor which I imagine tanked most the blow.

Anyways I was putting a new distributor unit on it and cranking it over to find TDC. And it stopped like I hit something didn’t really pay attention to where in the stroke it did it but then I turned 180 degrees back and it stopped again. Then after messing with it for a bit it started to spin clockwise once again with no interference. Has great compression and 120k mi on it. Also did an oil pan gasket on it so there was only residual oil in it. I sprayed some wd40 in the spark holes before it freed up unsure if that helped or not.

I suspect it is the valve cover and the rocker hitting making this issue but wanted to verify. I am going to change the valve covers out and do a set of seals anyways. Didn’t know if there was anything else I should look out for that would potentially cause that issue.

Other notes haven’t removed timing chain or cover or gears yet. Still original. Have not opened the motor up or removed any major components.

Edit. Here’s a pic of the dent. Haven’t gotten around to prying it off yet.

Need to make sure you don't have anything bent or warped and possible contact with piston , and valve seats . That's my thinking.

So drunk guy dropped the engine on the valve cover and this same guy stabbed the distributor?
And you have lockup during rotation?
Take your engine far far away.
Have you ever seen the Heisman Trophy?
Thats what you should do

Throw that valve cover in the trash and get a junkyard fresh cover. Just note that the later Vortec valve covers have a thinner PCV baffle that fits aftermarket rockers.
