Header EGR Pipe

The original owner of the truck eliminated the cats and booger welded some exhaust pieces in and in this last snow storm we got the exhaust broke..The Drivers side exhaust is basically open header and the drinker side is still together for now... I'm looking into doing shorty headers and welding up my own exhaust but I'm not sure what to do with the EGR pipe on the driver side manifold. Also what's everyones thoughts on putting the cats back in? I haul wood and plow but sometimes drive the truck to work

What year? What engine? What state are you in? Do you have to pass emissions in your state? Are you just looking to have a truck that runs or are you looking for a performance boost?

It’s in your signature. It doesn’t show up on mobile unless you orient your phone in the landscape position. I see it there.

Ideally, it's the first thing you type into the text of the first post. If it's in the title, senile old folks like me forget between the time we read the title then click on the thread link, and start reading the first post. If it's in the signature, or your user info, there's no guarantee that the vehicle you're talking about is the one you've described when you filled-out that part of the forum personalization.

In other words, I could put my '88 K1500 in a signature, but maybe I'm posting about my '97 K2500. Or maybe I'm posting about a friend's vehicle I happen to be stuck working on.

When the vehicle you're asking about is clearly mentioned first-thing in the main part of the first post, there's no confusion.



Weld a bung into the header tube, screw a fitting into the bung, and install the EGR tube onto the fitting. Or buy headers with the correct bung already installed. Use the same fitting GM used to connect the tube to the exhaust manifold.

Reinstall the same number of catalysts the vehicle was born with, in the same location as originals. But I would buy "Federal compliant" aftermarket high-flow cat(s) with larger inlet/outlet tubes rather than OEM-level (California compliant) expensive cat(s).



For the record, depending on the "conversion" kit you used, you probably have "disc brakes" not "disc breaks"; although if this is a cheap-junk flat-bracket disc conversion, you may wind up with both--disc brakes that break.

I recently modified a pair of headers to include a port for the EGR tube. Removed the original fitting from the stock manifold and used a short piece of tube welded onto a M27 x 2.00 nut to accept the original EGR fitting. My engine is the gen. VI 454, but I believe Schurkey is correct and that all EGR were the same.

Sorry about the crappy photo and the crappy welding. I screwed up my first attempt at this with the wrong size tube, had to cut that off clean it up and weld on another. I’ll also add this is a somewhat difficult weld with a skinny wall tube and rather heavy nut, get familiar with the pulser on your welder that will help a lot.

Oh, also weld all the way around the tube so there are no leaks, this was just a pic to show a friend how bad it was going for me.
