Mmmmm I don’t think so. I think it’s more of a drivetrain thing. @Road Trip has a C2500 with a 454 and has a FF. I’ve seen other Vortec trucks with SF.

Pulling the center cap on a FF and the first things you observe are the 8 bolts attaching the axle
inside the 8-lugger wheel studs. (See attached.) On the 8600 GVWR C2500s it's thought that
the big block was what tipped the scale for a FF to be installed at the factory?

And for what it's worth this is what it looked like to do the brakes on the FF version of your rear axle.
(JD7 rear brakes on a FF)

Enjoy the 8-lugger experience. It's the understressed way to be. :0)

Pretty productive day here. Garage was wringin’ wet with all the humidity today. My dad said he’d “show up and show how” haha. So he helped me out today. We got the rear brakes all assembled but hit a snag - I ordered drums for a FF. So I’ll get some SF drums and get those on and adjusted.

-new shoes
-new hardware
-new studs
-new parking brake cables

And… well, never seen this before.

Missing a shoe link on the passenger rear. Didn’t fall out, didn’t have the brakes off before today. Odd. Why didn’t it blow the seal out? Oh, here’s why:

The front of the cylinder moved freely, but was puking out a ton of rust. The rear was completely seized. So no fluid was lost when using the brakes. I’ve never had the brakes off since I bought this truck. No clue where the link went. Doubt it fell off and rattled out, there’s no room. The shoes weren’t chewed up and neither were the pads. So who knows.

Next weekend I’m driving this F’er.

Today was not the day.

Bench bled and replaced M/C after getting the shoes adjusted because the pedal feel was still not great. Pedal feel improved after that. 2 pumps and it was firm. Then I started the truck and they were back to being mushy. I turned the truck off and they firmed up after a couple pumps. I can hold the brakes and the drums do not turn when trying to rotate the axle with a pry bar.

So re-bled them and had good fluid, no bubbles, tightened up all unions and fittings, and checked for leaks. I had a couple of fittings that tightened up a bit more. Then I bled the combination valve and got some air out of there.

Fired the truck up again and same thing. Pedal straight to the floor.

I’m going to get some plugs and start working my way down the system to see if I’ve got some section that’s giving me an issue. If that doesn’t yield anything then I don’t know what else it could be. Dad and I are running out of ideas. I might take it to the dealership.

Nope. You are right. I need to do this. Thank you very much for the reminder. Going to pick up a C clamp tonight to try this out with. Will re-read that link and check out the tools again. I appreciate you looking out for me!

This morning I went out to try and clamp the metering valve in place. I first pumped the brakes and wanted to see it in action. It’s leaking fluid out of the system. I replaced the valve with one from another truck and the same thing happens. The seals looked fine on my original compared to the “new” one put in.

I can try and bleed the system with the valve depressed but I don’t know what good it will do. Unless this is normal operation if there’s air in the valve.
