We just got this truck (1997 Silverado Z71) from an estate, ignition would not turn and it was partially disassembled, the history of it is gone with the previous owner's passing. We're making progress, but one problem we have ATM is the indicator light on the PRNDL shifter display is not lighting up. We're wondering if this component might control that, or where else to look if not. It is the black one in the photo with the components exposed in the truck.

TIA, we're very excited about this pickup ... it has it's issues but it runs and drives so we're happy with that, it was not quite a basket case but close.

The black part you are looking at is the shift interlock solenoid. All it does is prevent the gearshift from being moved out of park unless the brake pedal is depressed. It may have been unhooked due to it not working correctly (probably bad solenoid or brake light switch). Won't prevent indicator light from working. The PRNDL switch is mounted on the transmission by the shift lever. Does the truck go through the gears and everything and it's just not lighting up?
