E brake light on check engine light off then switches

This is on a 1997 GMC , so when the e brake light is on the check engine light is off and then if the check engine light is on then the e brake light is off. Does anyone know what this is? Brakes are good I checked them.

Connect a scan tool, track down ALL the codes. Engine, Transmission, ABS, Air bag, instrument cluster...ALL OF THEM.

Cheap-junk scan tools may not connect with the ABS, Air bag, instrument cluster, and so forth. You need a PROPER scan tool.

Follow the Genuine GM service manual diagnostic procedure for each code. You can download the service manual set for your vehicle from the links in the Sticky thread section of the Engine forum.
