1998 k1500. having a new engine built. We would like to use this cam with factory ecu and fuel system. Can we tune it enough with black box or do we need 411?

0411 will make a big difference even with the stock cam. You would want some added compression, converter stall speed and gear with that cam. Also headers, good exhaust and a good air intake like a Volant to let it really breathe.

My '99 Suburban ran decently on a slightly larger cam, but the engine was making a random, loud tick, so I pulled it back out and then sold the Suburban. The engine then went into my '89 Stepside and the TBI system had no chance of keeping up with the cam.

You'll definitely want it tuned.

Before you give comp any of your scratch, please take a look at this Four-Stage selection of step-nose roller cams from Summit's house brand; they're ALL USA 5150 Billet Steel and ALL under $280

based on prior comp history, it's more likely than not that nearly $400 comp piece is ground on a cast iron aka SADI core; Not billet steel (fyi Your OE GM L31 cam is also 5150 billet steel).
