Can anyone tell me definitively if a 97 2wd 4l60 will swap into a 95 2wd? And if so what’s gotta be done to do it? Finding contradicting answers all over the place

A 1997 unit will retro to a 1995 vehicle however you will need to swap the 1997 4L60E's 3-2 control solenoid for a PWM solenoid...GM's part number is 24227747. This is necessary as the 1996-2008 3-2 control apply strategy is 'on-off' whereas the 1993-1995 3-2 apply strategy is pulse width-modulated (PWM)...The two variants present differing resistance values to the PCM so if the 1995 computer sees a 96-08 solenoid with an impedance of 19-24 ohms, it will likely throw the unit into limp mode.

No other changes are necessary. After doing the solenoid swap, install your MLPS over the selector shaft, bolt the transmission in and go.

Hey thanks for the reply, so what if I go with a 93 or 94 instead of a 97? 96 is the same process as 97, if I’m not mistaken. Correct me if I’m wrong. And 98 is different again.

Are there also differences between 93 & 94 that have to be sorted out making 95 a true stand alone year?

What I’m trying to do is source one and build it to have to install at some point. recently passed on a 97, but if another comes up in the age range I’d like to be equipped with the knowledge to pull the trigger

Thanks so much

4L60Es for model years 1993 and 94 won't work without adaptation; specifically the threaded bolt hole locations for the manual lever position sensor...You have to either figure out a way to mount it or bypass the MLPS. 1995 will work as is in any 95 vehicle (obviously) while 1996-97 will work with the adaptation for the 3-2 solenoid that I described above...You can also bolt the 95 valve body and spacer plate to the 97 case, keep the solenoids installed as is in the 95 valve body. Put a new set of gaskets (black, unmarked with two letters laser cut into each gasket).

1995 is a stand-alone year due to a combination of two things:

1. The introduction of PWM to the torque converter clutch apply strategy
2. Last year of the 3-2 downshift PWM apply strategy

The following year (1996), GM moved to an on-off strategy for the 3-2 downshift so the solenoid changed.
