89 RCLB K1500 - Quality time with my son building his first truck.

Yeah it probably isn’t needed for this application, it’s more of a teaching moment for my son. Some of the things we are doing is way overkill for this truck, but it’s fun doing it with him and gets him to respect it more. Maybe he won’t destroy his first vehicle, I hope.

The ideas both came from a book written by David Vizard.

I got 12 of them for about $8, used 8 for the engine and 4 for my tools. And they fit the dog bones correctly. Some have had issues with the $40 hitting, probably tapped them a little crooked.

They are lifter valley vents. They prevent oil from draining onto the cam and rotating assembly, helping with windage. The oil then drains down the front and back into the pan. You can use them with roller cams but not flat tappet. Look at post 383.

I’m not a professional either, but I would run that pattern.

385 is correct. But the deck plugs is what I was referring to. I was wondering if anyone would notice them. They are supposed to help stiffen the cylinders. The plugs are cheap and I have a 3/4” tap, so it’s just some labor. https://www.summitracing.com/parts/mor-37800

I was wondering when someone would ask about those. They are an $8 version of these. https://www.summitracing.com/parts/sum-120111 What else did you notice in those same pictures?

A couple of things for today. One, I just got done taking the rods and pistons apart. I didn’t like how tight the wrist pins were in the rods. The pistons were fine, so the rods are going back to the machine shop and getting honed out. Another thing to slow us down a little. Two, neither...

I asked my son after I posted this and he said the exact same thing.

This is the oil pan that I have for the engine, I’m debating whether to leave it clear zinc or paint it Chevy orange?

Next we got the cam installed, and then got the main journal measurements and everything checked out perfectly. Set the crankshaft in and got the main bolts all torqued. Then we installed the crank gear and installed the timing chain. It’s coming together nicely, slow, but nice.

Cam bearings are installed. The new tool is way better. Then I finished the expansion plugs and oil galley plugs. Finally time to get started on the bottom end.

    Laredo

I’ve been looking at some fittings to try and figure out how to run our oil cooler lines in AN hose. Also not much progress on my end either. Been assembling the engine, everything is time consuming.

Almost assembled motor, what bin file for start up?

Once you get the ebl you will get some bins with descriptions in the software . I would just use a stock one that closely resembles the truck and engine to get it started and broke in. I don’t remember exactly what tunes you get as it’s been a few years, but I think you’ll find one or two to get...

    1998 2 door tahoe

Last time I did it with the tranny and transfer case mated. I did it by myself and I remember thinking, there’s got to be a better way. So this time on my son’s truck we are doing the engine and transmission together and then the transfer case. With the front clip and bed off it should be much...

Well it’s been almost two weeks, but we got back to work today for a few hours. We got the final cleaning done on the block and sprayed it down with wd. Then we chased all the threads and installed the freeze plugs and most of the oil galley plugs. I have to pick up a couple more tomorrow. Next...

    Sourcing 2wd rear lift blocks

805 is one of my favorites. I’m heading down to Napa in a couple of days thought it might work out, it might be more to ship them than they are worth, but we can check. I won’t be able to check until I get back back in a week. They are brand new from Rough Country, we went with a shackle and...
