IVe been working on ny 89 k1500 and recently replaced the transmission pan, filter and gasket thinking it would stop all of my leaks. After driving about 30 miles, it turns out it's also leaking out of what I'm told is the governor cover on my transmission. It's very rusty and I don't see anything holding it on. Does it just pry off? It looks like quite a pain from how tight everything is down there. I already ordered a new one and it's on its way. When I take the cover off will anything fall out? Any help is appreciated.

Just pries off, it is a press fit like a front wheel bearing dust/grease cap.

Once you have it off, check the bore itself for any usual wear then install a new machine-cut seal onto the cover before reinstalling it...Then reinstall the retainer clip, if so equipped (if the case has a hole to install the clip but no clip was ever installed, purchase a new clip and install it).

You should also check the governor gear's condition as well - pull the governor out and check the gear for cracking, excessively worn teeth or unusual wear/scoring on the governor body...Also check the movement of the valve at the center of the governor body - simply turn it upside down in your hand, actuate the weights and see if the valve moves...If it doesn't move, you'll need to remove the gear with a roll pin punch/hammer and then remove the valve...Once done, polish the inner diameter of the bore with bench buddies and a drill (I use WD-40 for lubricant).

If the valve moves freely but the gear is worn, replace the gear with a new one...They cost around $15.
