Hello,

I have a 4l60e I'm rebuilding in my 1993 K1500. It is my second rebuild, after just doing one in my 1995 Suburban K1500. I felt a little more confident this time but already somethings are different. First, I have been babying this transmission for years. It seems like 4th gear was slipping so I drove it in D3 for the past ~5 years. Last weekend 2nd gear is no longer holding, So I can drive 1st, let it basically skip over 2nd and then 3rd is ok. I purchased the truck used probably 12 years ago and was told the trans was rebuilt. Also this one starts with a 4 on the case so should be a 1994 4l60e.

1) Does it make sense that 4th and 2nd would share a problem? (My plan is just to rebuild and not worry much about this.)

2) On disassembly I noticed a check ball is missing. I believe it is the 1-2 clutch apply piston check ball. I expected to at least find it in the pan but so far I have not. Is it common for a re-builder to leave this ball out? Should I put a ball back in here? Any tips on replacement?

Here is a picture in case I have the name wrong.

That is the low reverse check ball - many including me, remove it for a bit more robust engagement into reverse. You can put a 1/4" check ball there or leave it out - up to you.

Drill the 2-3 feed, band rel and 3-4 feed holes in tbe plate to .093; add a Corvette servo for 2nd gear and drill the 1-2 feed to .070-.076. These figures assume a stock stall of 1600-1800 will be used.
