Hello All! Great to find this resource. I've had my '96 Silverado for 7 years, but it has been sitting off road the last 3 because I couldn't pass inspection. The issues were: it had a rear cab mount support crack, and also had bed cross-member rust outs.
However, I've been working on it off and on on it over the last summer and this one while it has sat, and I have learned a lot in the process. I've doubled and rewelded the upper cab mount surface, which wasn't in too bad shape anyway, other then the crack. I've replaced the rubber mounts on borth sides. I've removed the pickup bed, and ground off the old cross members and put back steel square tube in their place. I've fabricated a new spare tire X shape cross member out of channel iron. Exterior: I've been welding on new sheet metal for the driver side cab corner, and the lower outside door panels. I've replaced the rear brake shoes and cylinders, and the emergency brake cables. I've replaced the rear bumper with new. New rear tires. As you can tell, I want to keep this truck.
My present issue is multiple codes on the ABS system. All three sensors reported as no signal, plus bpm valve fault. I've sent for new sensors but the valve issue is the one that has me the most worried. When I scan, it doesn't always report that one as a problem. Anyway.... long introduction I'm glad to have found this forum devoted to this age vehicle. Thanks for being here, and I'm sure I'll learn a lot -- I feel like I've been winging it without much support.
